If you go look at the pullers (search for Moen 1222 cartridge puller) you will see where some people have good luck and some people don’t and have to turn it over to a plumber to fix. What happens is there are two rubberish gaskets that seal against the housing and a funky valve on the inside of the cartridge that mixes the water. In low use situations, it freezes up and you lose hot water. Then when you try to replace the cartridge, it may or may not be frozen in the barrel. I got the Danco puller which as far as I can tell from the picture of the Moen tool is identical. It mostly broke it free but the gaskets are stuck and holding the barrel captive. It’s been a little by little ordeal to get the damn cartridge out. The rub is in low use areas. If these don’t get regularly exercised, they freeze and die. I would run my shower monthly to make sure I had water in the trap. Not enough. If you have a bathroom with a shower and tub and only use the tub, do yourself a favor and consider replacing the cartridge before it freezes. Seriously. Consider replacing the cartridges every other year if it’s in a low use situation. Moen made some very bad materials choices to use stuff that grows together or is so subject to water deposits it freezes – and you get to suffer for it. Bet they saved a few cents. Never again for me. I will never have a single mixing valve for anything in a wall. These things suck. Sink faucets can easily be replaced when they freeze up, but something in wall is a major renovation if you can’t get the cartridge out. Remember – one tool slip and you can damage the barrel and then it will leak. As far as I am concerned, these shouldn’t be on the market. You might as well be installing a time bomb. Use two separate valves and don’t put these in a wall you can’t get to like an outside wall. That’s why it has taken two days – I have had to be extremely careful to not hurt the brass barrel assembly. If I hurt that, it’s a bathroom remodel and I don’t want to do that. Thanks, Moen. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. |
